El Departamento de Ciencia Política y Estudios Internacionales tiene el agrado de invitar al seminario Israel Constitutional Crisis: A legal reform or a Coup D’état?, a cargo de Menachem Hofnung.

Israel is currently facing the most serious constitutional crisis in its 75 years history. Weekly massive demonstrations with the participation of hundreds of thousands of people are taking place all over the country in opposition to the newly elected government proposals for a radical change in the balance of power between branches of government.

The proposals, if approved, would have the smallest possible majority in the Knesset (Israel’s Parliament) – 61 lawmakers out of 120 – the power to then override the Supreme Court and reinstate the annulled legislation. In addition to many other proposed reforms, there are bills intended to grant the elected government control over judicial appointments and limit the authority of its legal advisors who are currently nominated on a strictly professional basis.

There are claims that the proposed changes are not merely technical reforms, but rather, a ruling government-initiated Coup D’état.
